This brief biography of Princess Diana highlights her life and achievements, and features a poem and quotation from Lady Di herself.
"There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded," said Princess Diana about her marriage to Prince Charles. Despite her fairy tale royal weding, the Princess of Wales struggled with love, marriage, and body image. The third person in Diana's marriage wasn't her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth. It was Camilla Parker Bowles, who was Prince Charles' first love, who contributed to the royal divorce, and whom Charles married eight years after Diana's death. Camilla's presence wasn't usually physical, but she was always there. A Brief Biography of Princess DianaPrincess Diana died in a tragic car accident in Paris. She had just left the Ritz Hotel with Dodi Al Fayed (son of Harrods' owner Mohammed Al Fayed). Photographers on motorcycles were pursuing their Mercedes when it hit a pillar and smashed into a wall; Al Fayed and the chauffeur died instantly. The princess passed away later, after two hours in surgery. Her bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, was the only survivor. Charges weren't laid against the paparazzi who chased the princess, though the inquest into the accident was ongoing 10 years later, in 2007. It wasn't just Princess Diana's fairy tale royal wedding, rocky marriage and personal struggles that makes her the world's most famous Briton. It wasn't just Lady Diana's charity work or similarity to Mother Teresa. Her fame flourished because she broke through the traditional British habits of reservation, unexpressed emotions, and stoic suffering. Princess Di gave Britons permission to reveal their humanity. Princess Diana blushed. She called herself "thick as a plank." Lady Diana admitted her bulimia, depression, jealousy and feelings of isolation. Princess Diana found an affinity with drug addicts, alcoholics, and abused people because of their honesty and vulnerability. They were real people living real lives, and she was drawn to that. A Biographer's Opinion on the People's Princess"People thought they knew her because she shared her thoughts and feelings, which no one in her position had ever done before," said Ingrid Seward, author of The Queen and Di: The Untold Story. Princess Diana helped modernize the monarchy – which is now more popular than ever before. She increased AIDS awareness, united opposition to land mines, and built charities. Lady Diana literally touched and hugged the people she met, whether they were physically battered or dying from AIDS. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair said, "Diana taught us a new way to be British." Princess Diana never really fit into the royal household; her rebellion started as self-destructive tendencies and matured into healthy expressions of her true self. Princess Diana developed a more authentic fashion sense, deepened her humanitarian efforts, and explored new relationships with men – both during her marriage and after her divorce. After the royal divorce, Lady Di withdrew from most of the charities she once supported and sought to redefine herself. Though she pursued a different lifestyle as a new woman, one of her goals remained: to make Britain a more modern and compassionate country. Diana Spencer was born on July 1, 1961 and died on August 31, 1997. Poetry from Princess Diana: “Life is mostly froth and bubble; Two things stand alone; Kindness in another's trouble; Courage in your own.” If you found Inspiration from Princess Diana interesting, you might like:
