Famous Mayors

Early Years

Born May 28, 1944 in Brooklyn, New York, to Italian immigrant parents, Rudy Guiliani was raised on Long Island and in 1968, graduated from New York University School of Law magna cum laude. He then clerked for Judge Lloyd McMahon, US District Judge for the Southern District of New York and rose to become executive US Attorney. In 1975, he became chief of staff to the Deputy Attorney General . Rudy Giuliani's first high-profile prosecution was the corruption case of Congressman Bert Podell. He practiced law from 1971-1981 at the firm of Patterson, Belknap, Webb and Tyler.

In 1983, Rudy Giuliani gained national prominence with his prosecution of well-known Wall Street figures, Ivan Boeskyand Michael Miliken for insider trading. He garnered criticism for some of his tactics. Many of Rudy Giuliani's very public arrests led to a sudden dropping of charges for lack of evidence, but to his credit, he was one of the leading forces in a relentless campaign to jail drug dealers, combat organized crime and prosecute white-collar criminals.

Mayoralty

Rudy Giuliani first ran for mayor as the candidate for both the Republican and Liberal parties, attempting to succeed Ed Koch in 1989. He lost the election to Democrat David Dinkins in the closest election in New York City. He was elected in 1993 in an election based on the principal issues of crime and taxes. Giuliani promised a return to social order, which he delivered. Although some dispute how much Rudy Giuliani's policies affected the city's reduction in crime, many New Yorkers feel that he made a great difference.

September 11, 2001

Rudy Giuliani's courageous and decisive leadership during the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center endeared him to New Yorkers and the nation as a whole. Not just a speaker from a podium far removed from danger, Rudy Giuliani walked beside death and smoking ruin as he helped coordinate rescue and recovery efforts. He provided emotional and moral support to a crippled city desperate for consolation. Time Magazine named Rudy Giuliani "Person of The Year" for 2001 and Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in February of 2002.

Rudy Giuliani is an avid Yankee fan and a great American patriot. He is a man to be revered for his courage both today and in the history books for all the tomorrows.
